An immersive adventure unfolds in stunning detail
Eidos Interactive, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and NVIDIA Corporation announced that the Games for Windows LIVE release of forthcoming DC Comics-licensed videogame, Batman: Arkham Asylum, will feature NVIDIA® PhysX® technology, which allows for the creation of incredibly realistic worlds full of interactive materials and objects. As a result, PC gamers will get to experience intense realism and fully immerse themselves in Batman’s journey into Gotham City’s asylum for the criminally insane.
Hardware accelerated by supported NVIDIA GeForce GPUs, PhysX technology provides an even deeper level of engagement for players of Batman: Arkham Asylum by utilizing the processing power of the NVIDIA GPU to render stunning in-game physics objects in the environment that not only add to the overall look of the game, but create an immersive and believable world.
With PhysX technology enabled, players can explore darkened corridors packed with volumetric fog which reacts to Batman’s movement and cobwebs which tear with his passing. Combat becomes a maelstrom of motion as office papers are thrown into the air alongside soda cans and litter as Batman lands each punch upon The Joker’s henchmen. Throughout the game, the decaying gothic architecture is realized to an incredible detail with wall tiles chipping and breaking, stone pillars crumbling upon impact, and particles from breaking glass and debris shattering and falling down around Batman’s feet.
“Supporting NVIDIA PhysX technology has allowed us to add that little bit extra to the PC version of the game,” said Sefton Hill, Game Director at Rocksteady Studios. “As Batman interacts with the world, the aging asylum creates a more immersive, believable world which really draws the player in.”
Batman: Arkham Asylum™ exposes players to a unique, dark and atmospheric adventure that takes them to the depths of Arkham Asylum – Gotham City’s psychiatric hospital for the criminally insane. Gamers will move in the shadows, instigate fear amongst their enemies and confront The Joker and Gotham City’s most notorious villains who have taken over the asylum. Using a wide range of Batman’s gadgets and abilities, players will become the Invisible Predator and attempt to foil The Joker’s demented scheme.
The NVIDIA PhysX development platform consists of a robust physics engine, API, and middleware designed to give developers and animators unprecedented creative control over the look of their final in-game interactivity by allowing them to author and preview physics in real time. To take advantage of PhysX technology in Batman: Arkham Asylum, players must have a compatible NVIDIA GPU and a copy of the Games for Windows LIVE version of the game, which will be available beginning September 15th, 2009, in North America, and September 18th, 2009, in Europe and Australia.
Batman: Arkham Asylum™ will also be available for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft® and PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system from August 25th, 2009, in North America and August 28th, 2009, in Europe and Australia.
Resident Evil 5, Street Fighter IV and Bionic Commando Coming to PC Starting This July
Capcom®, a leading worldwide developer and publisher of video games, announced that three of its blockbuster hit console games of 2009 will be coming to the PC beginning this summer. Bionic Commando, Street Fighter IV and Resident Evil 5 will all be coming to the PC, beginning in July with Street Fighter IV and Bionic Commando, while Resident Evil 5 comes later in the year. All three games will be optimized for the PC platform and will have new PC-specific features added to the already great games. All three games will be available both at retail and via various digital distribution methods.
Street Fighter IV features a mix of returning favourites such as Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li and Guile along with new characters created for this game, such as Crimson Viper, Abel, El Fuerte, and Rufus. Characters and environments are rendered in stylized 3D, while the game is played in the classic Street Fighter™ 2D perspective with additional 3D camera flourishes. Instantly familiar six-button controls are the hallmark of the game, with a host of new special moves and features. Mixing classic genre-defining game mechanics the franchise is known and loved for with all-new, never-before-seen gameplay systems, Street Fighter IV brings a brand new fighting experience to fans the world over. The PC version of Street Fighter IV will feature online play, higher screen resolutions and three new shaders based on three of the “artistic” trailers released in 2008 that will change the visual appearance of the game: “watercolour,” “poster” and “sumi-e ink” styles. Street Fighter IV PC is scheduled for release throughout PAL territories on July 3.
The first true sequel to the classic 1988 Nintendo Entertainment System original, Bionic Commando sees the return of the bionically-enhanced Nathan “Rad” Spencer. Time has not been kind to Spencer: 10 years after his heroic defeat of the Imperials, he has been betrayed by the government he swore to serve, imprisoned for crimes he didn’t commit, and sentenced to death. Bionic Commando transposes the swing-and-shoot gameplay of the 8-bit original onto a stunning 3D environment of towering buildings, suspended roadways and monorails, deep canyons and sheer rock faces, where every environment is scalable using swinging, repelling, climbing and wall-walking techniques. The PC version of Bionic Commando will support higher resolutions than the console version, remappable controls including mouse and keyboard support, support for both DirectX®9 and DirectX® 10 and online connectivity for multiplayer sessions.
In Resident Evil 5, returning hero Chris Redfield is sent to Africa to investigate a biological weapon that is transforming the populace into aggressive and disturbing creatures. Joined by another local BSSA agent, Sheva Alomar, the two must work together to solve the truth behind the frightening turn of events. Featuring a revolutionary new co-op mode of gameplay, Resident Evil 5 will let players experience fear together as terror moves out of the shadows and into the light of day. The PC version of Resident Evil 5 will feature online play for co-operative play sessions over the internet and will also take advantage of NVIDIA®’s new GeForce® 3D Vision technology (wireless 3D Vision glasses sold separately).
New version benefits from longer development time
Eidos and Beautiful Game Studios are pleased to announce that the next version of Championship Manager, the leading name in football management simulation, will launch in April 2009.
With a complete graphical and engine overhaul, Championship Manager 09 allows users to lead their teams to glory in a completely new version designed to give managers a true feeling of ‘total control’ over their teams and clubs.
“We have a whole host of new features which we’re incredibly proud of,” said Roy Meredith, General Manager of Championship Manager. “This is a new beginning for the Championship Manager franchise and we are 100% focused on getting it right, that’s why we have had a longer development time than any previous version of the game.”
Championship Manager 09 has dramatically improved navigation for the user and the game features an entirely new fully animated 3D match engine. Designed and developed to reflect and enhance a management experience, the engine uses over 500 motion-captured animations per player and has been built and developed specifically for a PC football management simulation.
Developed by Beautiful Game Studios, Championship Manager 09 will provide a totally authentic football management experience where every decision a user takes has a direct consequence on the success or failure of their club.
“This is our opportunity to give consumers a reason to believe in Championship Manager once again,” continued Meredith. “After 4 years of mid-table mediocrity, we’re making great strides to become genuine title contenders. We want everyone to test this out by trying the demo which is out in March. Try the demo and make up your own minds.”
Darren Reid, author of the best selling fantasy novel The Lord of Darkness and Shadow , today announces the release of The Sword of Oz for PC, next generation consoles and iPod on January 19 th , 2007 . The Sword of Oz is based upon L. Frank Baum’s masterpiece novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and its sequels and creates an interactive book which explores Oz’s tragic past.
The Sword of Oz is the first part of a planned trilogy of interactive ebooks collectively known as The Dark Witches of Oz . The interactive ebooks have each been optimized for various formats including PC and Nintendo’s Wii and DS plus Sony’s PS3 and PSP consoles, all accessible through their browsers. A separate version is also due out for Apple iPod.
The Sword of Oz is an epic fantasy adventure which tells a part of Oz’s history that has thus far not been chronicled. Written as a companion piece to the original L. Frank Baum novels, The Sword of Oz chronicles Oz in the days before the wicked witches overthrew the old king of Oz and created the world Baum describes in his original works. Arthur Gale (the future grandfather of a rather famous citizen from Kansas ) is the character through which this new chapter in Oz’s history is experienced. The Sword of Oz is a multi-branching adventure in which the reader can choose which adventures they wish to see Arthur embark upon. The different paths through the narrative vary widely but are also closely connected so that events not directly experienced by a reader in one sitting still affect those in the adventure they choose to experience.
Two further episodes are planned in the Dark Witches of Oz trilogy and have been given the working titles The Lion of Oz and The Rise of the Dark Witch of Oz. A novelised version of these stories and the series has been mooted as possibility by Reid in the future. A spin off PC adventure game entitled The Sword of Oz: The Emerald Ring is also in development and when a suitable publishing partner is found further announcements will be made about this upcoming project.
The Sword of Oz joins the growing free library of literature offered by best selling fantasy author Darren Reid. Reid began his free ebook library at the end of 2006 releasing versions of a free prequel novella to his bestselling Chronicles of the Shadow series across PC, iPod and next generation formats including the Nintendo Wii and Sony PS3. So far the library has been a great success and Reid plans to release a number of titles throughout 2007. The Sword of Oz heads up the release schedule in January with Two Wizards: A Chronicles of the Shadow Prequel and Xevicom Forever (a graphic novel) due out in February and March respectively.
Darren Reid is a Scottish fantasy author whose first novel, The Lord of Darkness and Shadow: The Chronicles of the Shadow Book One , was released at the beginning of 2006. This book was the first in a series of fantasy/science fiction cross over novels that fused fantasy with science fiction, horror and simple human drama. 2006 also saw the first media adaptation of one of Darren’s work with the release of Cell . It was developed by Parsec award winning audio-book creators Variant Frequencies and is currently in negotiations to be turned into a comic book.
To celebrate the release of The Sword of Oz Darren has written and released a short essay entitled On Oz which explains The Sword of Oz ‘s place in the wider continuity of the series.
Regarding the coming release of The Sword of Oz Darren said “I cannot wait to share this vision of Oz with the world. The Sword of Oz is a great epic fantasy take on one of the original all time classic fantasy novels and explores stories that were only hinted at by L. Frank Baum in his original series.”
When asked whether The Sword of Oz and its related stories may appear in other formats Reid commented “It would be wonderful to see a definitive novelized version of the story appears and it is something I am considering. Also, there is a PC adventure game spin off in development but both projects would require the right publishing partner to bring to their fullest potential.”
Currently Darren is working towards the release of several new titles in 2007 including the much anticipated follow up to The Lord of Darkness and Shadow. The new novel, The Brotherhood of the Shadow , is tentatively due for release in Q2 2007. Another title which has been eagerly awaited, The Half Broken Crown , is also due for release in Q1 2007.
The Sword of Oz will be released on January 19 th 2007 on www.NextGenBooks.com – a new website for PC and console (Wii, DS, PS3 and PSP) users to access Darren Reid’s free ebook library. The Sword of Oz will be availably exclusively on this site. As a special preview, the prologue to The Sword of Oz is out now on this website. There is also a press section which includes screenshots and links for interview requests and advance review copies.
