Blizzard Entertainment unveiled StarCraft II, the sequel to its award-winning real-time strategy game StarCraft, at the 2007 Blizzard Worldwide Invitational event in Seoul, South Korea. The announcement took place inside the Olympic Gymnastics Arena, in front of thousands of attendees, who received a presentation that included a StarCraft II cinematic trailer and a gameplay demonstration by the development team.

Designed to be the ultimate competitive real-time strategy game, StarCraft II will feature the return of the Protoss, Terran, and Zerg races, overhauled and re-imagined with Blizzard’s signature approach to game balance. Each race will be further distinguished from the others, with several new units and new gameplay mechanics, as well as new abilities for some of the classic StarCraft units that will be making a reappearance in the game. StarCraft II will also feature a custom 3D-graphics engine with realistic physics and the ability to render several large, highly detailed units and massive armies on-screen simultaneously.

“With StarCraft II, we’ll be able to do everything we wanted to do with the original StarCraft and more,” stated Mike Morhaime, president and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. “We recognize that expectations are high following the long-running popularity of the original game, but we plan to meet those expectations and deliver an engaging, action-packed, competitive experience that StarCraft players and strategy gamers worldwide will enjoy.” Read more

NVIDIA Redefines The Notebook PC

May 15, 2007 · Filed Under News · Comment

NVIDIA Corporation (Nasdaq: NVDA) today announced a new family of NVIDIA GeForce 8 Series of graphics processors targeted at the newly evolved notebook PC market. These new GPUs (graphics processing units) help power a whole, new generation of notebook PCs that deliver the ultimate visual experience for Windows Vista, DirectX 10 games, HD movies, and popular applications like Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Live Maps—changing the way users see and interact with their computers through enhanced visual quality, responsiveness and ease-of-use.

The new GeForce 8M Series notebook GPUs—the world’s first to support DirectX 10 and fully accelerate decoding of H.264 full HD movies—are available now from the top PC makers such as HP, Toshiba, Acer, Samsung, and ASUS.

Initially available in the GeForce 8600M and GeForce 8400M versions, the new GPUs make ultra-realistic DirectX10 3D games and vivid HD video playback on notebook PCs a reality with new features including:

“New, extremely efficient, unified architecture that delivers up to 2x the performance of previous generation GPUs for Windows Vista, DirectX 10 games and mainstream applications
Revolutionary PureVideo™ HD video processing engine for the ultimate playback of HD DVD, Blu-ray and HD movie downloads
NVIDIA PowerMizer™ technology that intelligently balances the user’s need for longer battery life and performance

“The new GeForce 8M Series GPUs are ushering in the new generation of Vista notebook PCs,” said Rene Haas, General Manager of the notebook GPU business at NVIDIA. “The new notebooks with support for Windows Vista’s Premium, DirectX 10 and HD video playback, will help consumers enjoy the new era of visually rich content as it was meant to be experienced.”

“Our new generation of HP notebooks with GeForce 8M Series enables a rich and enjoyable computing experience that is a multimedia enthusiast’s dream,” said Jonathan Kaye, director of marketing for consumer notebook PCs at HP. “With NVIDIA’s new technology integrated into HP notebook PCs, customers will see and interact with their notebooks with enhanced visual quality and responsiveness that’s essential for enjoying high-definition content and games.

“Last year Toshiba and NVIDIA collaborated to bring an unmatched HD DVD experience to notebook computers,” said Jeff Barney, vice president of marketing, Digital Products Division, Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc. “Now with the new NVIDIA GeForce 8600M series GPU, the Qosmio G45, Toshiba’s premier audio-video notebook computer, will help usher users toward a new generation of HD entertainment possibilities.”

Playing HD video on a notebook is a technical challenge solved by NVIDIA’s PureVideo HD technology. This technology leverages the revolutionary new video processing engine in the GeForce 8600M and GeForce 8400M GPUs for home-theater-quality playback of multiple HD movie formats, including HD DVD, Blu-ray, and HD video downloads. The new video-processing engine performs 100% of the H.264 HD video decoding, freeing the CPU for other tasks and significantly reducing power consumption, heat and noise.

Game developers are using NVIDIA GPUs and the new Microsoft DirectX 10 technology to create this next year’s most anticipated releases such as Crysis from Crytek. The new GPUs are the first to support DirectX 10 and promise to deliver astounding realism for an absolutely engaging visual experience with unprecedented levels of detail for gaming.

The new NVIDIA 8M Series GPUs are available in the GeForce 8600M and GeForce 8400M models. To learn more about the GeForce 8M Series GPUs and to find a list of the new generation notebooks using these GPUs, please visit www.nvidia.com.

Microsoft merging with Yahoo!?!
The New York Post owes everyone a good follow-up story. You can’t just drop a bombshell that jerks around 80,000 Microsoft and Yahoo! employees, rocks Wall Street and then fizzles before the day is over. The Post should investigate — and report — whether its anonymous investment banker sources made any money off the huge run in YHOO caused by its story.
Microsoft and Yahoo in talks over deal   —  Google’s runaway success in the search-engine business threatened to spark an upheaval in the online media world, as it emerged that Microsoft has made a tentative takeover approach to internet group Yahoo.

Yahoo! Is Much Better Without Microsoft   —  The whole furry of speculation that happened yesterday about Microsoft looking to merge with Yahoo! really got me to thinking. I was happy reading Giga Om’s article this morning about the talks being off , if they were even “truly” on to begin with. Yahoo! is much better without Microsoft, however, the same can’t be said for Microsoft. …

Microsoft + Yahoo = Microhoo?   —  Every now and then a news item comes by that I find just hysterical. Not so hysterical, mind you, that it couldn’t happen. But funny nonetheless. I could not resist speculating on the consequences of a merger between Microsoft and Yahoo, to be named, I presume, Microhoo. First, the new company will need a logo, which […]

Analysts Cynical of Microsoft-Yahoo Deal   —  (AP) — Speculation about a possible Microsoft-Yahoo tie-up met with skepticism Friday from analysts as reports that the deal was already dead began to surface. Microsoft and Yahoo: no deal   —  Filed under: Misc. Gadgets According to The Journal, the Microsoft / Yahoo merger talks which first took place a year ago (and then again “in recent months”, as was discovered today) turned up nil — that’s right, the deal’s off. Again. Not that it was ever on. Anyway, apparently discussions are in fact no longer active, and it was concluded …

Microsoft/Yahoo, the Immelt Indicator, and a Quiz   —  One semi-rational two-fold way to look at today’s rumor du jour — Microsoft buying Yahoo, or not … maybe — is a) that people want Microsoft to do something to get out of its perceived funk; and b) that everything is in play.
